Nepal's Political Scene Witnesses Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
